Electrum to deliver a 5 MW Electrolyzer project for the Gdańsk Refinery

Electrum has signed a contract with Rafineria Gdańska to implement a turnkey project for the construction of a hydrogen production facility using water electrolysis. This is a pioneering initiative in the region and one of the largest of its kind in Poland, marking a significant first step toward the decarbonization of the refining industry.

Comprehensive Turnkey Delivery

The project scope includes the comprehensive execution of a 5 MW alkaline water electrolysis installation, along with all supporting infrastructure. Electrum is responsible for the entire investment cycle – from conceptual design, through construction and detailed engineering, to delivery, installation, and commissioning. The contract also covers earthworks, foundation construction, sanitary and electrical installations, and the construction of a pipe rack for hydrogen pipelines.

Technology and Partnership

The project will utilize alkaline electrolysis technology provided by a global leader in this field. As the general contractor, Electrum is actively involved in adapting the technology to the specific needs of the facility, co-developing process diagrams and integrating solutions within the refinery’s infrastructure.

This is a project of strategic importance – both for us as the contractor and for the entire industrial sector in Poland. It demonstrates that the use of green hydrogen in the decarbonization of energy-intensive industries can go hand in hand with cost and operational efficiency. Our experience in delivering complex energy investments, along with our expertise in logistics, automation, and systems integration, is key to the success of this undertaking –  says Michał Świerczyński, Commercial Director at Electrum.

Hydrogen for Industry – The Future Starts Today

The project in Gdańsk is not only a response to the specific needs of the facility but also part of a broader strategy for Poland’s energy transition. The 5 MW electrolyzer currently under construction is the first industrial-scale green hydrogen production facility in the Pomeranian Voivodeship.

The installation will produce 85 kg of hydrogen per hour with a purity of no less than 99.995%, meeting the requirements of SAE J2719, PN-EN 17124, and ISO 14687:2019 standards. This hydrogen will be used in the automotive sector as fuel for transportation.

– Electrolysis is currently one of the most promising technologies for industries aiming to operate in a modern and responsible way. Launching our own installation of this kind will not only help us reduce emissions but also build an advantage in the field of alternative fuels and gain knowledge and competencies in operating and managing the installation, as well as understanding its impact on existing infrastructure. This investment aligns with EU green regulations, but more importantly, it addresses real market and transport sector needs. We are pleased to be implementing this project with a partner who understands both the technology and the specifics of working in an industrial environment – emphasizes Adrian Szkudlarski, CEO of Gdańsk Refinery.
